OLL Parishioner Pens Book on Our Lady of Sorrows

We encourage everyone to check out Contemplating the Seven Sorrows of Mary, a new book coauthored by Ruth Berghorst, an OLL parishioner. You can learn more about the book and purchase it at sophiainstitute.com or Amazon. Here’s an excerpt of the book description:

“Now is the time to respond to our Lady’s call to pray this chaplet fervently. In these pages, you will discover how your own pierced heart can become a portal of grace that opens and transforms you into all that God wants you to be, allowing you to share in the mercy and love of Christ’s Sacred Heart by uniting your sufferings to his.”

September 15 is usually the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, which honors Mary’s participation in Christ’s suffering and her help for all those who suffer. This memorial is superseded by the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time this year, but we’re still recognizing the occasion here at OLL. (Also, in a providential coincidence, this Sunday’s readings focus on Christ’s Cross and our participation in it, a theme that’s central to the Our Lady of Sorrows devotion.)

After Mass, stop by the table in the narthex to pick up your very own Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary courtesy of the Holy Mother’s Beads. Though it was made by our Rosary-making guild, it is not the same as a typical Rosary! It has seven sets of seven beads on which to meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Mary:

  1. The Prophecy of Simeon
  2. The Flight into Egypt
  3. The Loss of Jesus for Three Days
  4. The Carrying of the Cross
  5. The Crucifixion of Jesus
  6. Jesus Taken Down from the Cross
  7. Jesus Laid in the Tomb
