Fasting

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

Fasting: A person is permitted to eat one full meal and two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. All Catholics aged 18-59 are obliged to follow the fast.

Abstinence: A person should abstain from all animal-derived products, except foods without meat taste. Fish are considered a different category of animal and are therefore permitted. All Catholics aged 14+ are obliged to abstain from meat.

Those who are excused from the fast and abstinence rules include people outside the age specifications, anyone who suffers from a physical or mental condition in which a dietary change would be hazardous to their health, and pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, use your best judgment to determine if you are able to follow the obligation.

Almsgiving

Buy a Pipe: Now is the perfect time to support our pipe organ’s upcoming arrival and installation!

Easter and Mother’s Day Flower Offering: Consider donating toward our Easter and Mother’s Day Flower Fund in honor or memory of a loved one, friend, family member, or mother.

CRS Rice Bowl: Starting Ash Wednesday, pick up a CRS Rice Bowl in the Narthex and collect your loose change throughout the Lenten season. Bring back your collection at the end of the season so the funds may be donated.

Liturgical Music During Lent

As we begin the season of Lent, we find increased silence before and after Mass, as musical preludes, postludes, and interludes are suspended during this season. We also refrain from singing the Gloria and Alleluia. The fast of these two joyful acclamations is intended to help us immerse ourselves into the penitential character of this liturgical season and promote a longing for the jubilation and glory of Easter. The increased silence surrounding the liturgy, in union with the restrained and solemn character of our liturgical music, helps us enter into the desert with Christ throughout these forty days and will allow the joy of the Easter season to shine forth all the more gloriously.

New Sanctus

Why is There More Silence Before the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei)?

You may notice more silence between the Sign of Peace and the Lamb of God. Following the Sign of Peace, the priest prepares the Eucharist to be distributed by the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Then, he begins the Fraction Rite, which is the breaking of the consecrated host. While he is breaking the bread, the Lamb of God is sung. Some of our Lamb of God settings are quite lengthy, so they begin shortly after the Sign of Peace. Since our Lent setting is very short, we observe more silence after the Sign of Peace so as to properly line up this litany with this essential liturgical action.
