Our parish’s beautiful new crucifix, which was hand-carved in Italy, has now been installed behind the altar, just in time for our celebration of Christ’s Passion!
Why did OLL get a new crucifix, and why is it so prominent? To focus our attention on Christ’s loving sacrifice on the cross, which is the very center of our faith and of the Mass, and to help us rejoice and give thanks for the Eucharist.
St. Paul said, “I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). Likewise, this Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and at Mass throughout the year, the crucifix will remind us that Christ died to save us, that his sacrifice is made present to us at the consecration of the Eucharist, and that each of us is called to take up our own cross and follow him.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Jerry Hammes, a friend of OLL and a former parishioner, who donated the funds for the crucifix in memory of his late wife Dorene.
